This is a tricky question because a doctor may accept health coverage from your health insurance carrier and the doctor may even accept health insurance plans for individuals, but may not accept that particular health insurance plan.
Health Insurance For Individuals
Individuals seeking individual health insurance plans will normally settle upon one of two solutions when looking for individual medical insurance coverage. They will either seek out a face to face meeting with several local medical insurance brokers/agents in order to get individual health quotes and buy health insurance from one local health insurance broker/agent.
Or they will try look for the cheapest health insurance for individuals by looking for health insurance online. The shoppers who go online will normally look for quotes on health insurance by going to the websites of health insurance companies in their state, the websites of local health insurance providers, or go on the state healthcare exchange website. That means that, here in California, people would be looking on the California health insurance exchange website to enroll in a Covered California health insurance plan in order to compare health insurance prices and buy the cheapest health insurance.
It’s already been a long and drawn out process of looking for individual health quotes to find affordable medical coverage, and meeting with half a dozen people to explain the Affordable Care Act and Covered CA. They buy health insurance and get healthcare that complies with health insurance regulations then they go to the doctor and discover that the doctor doesn’t accept their health insurance coverage.
Why is this?
Group Health Insurance Coverage & Grandfathered Individual Health Insurance Plans
Some doctors may only accept group health insurance plans, for large or small groups, from certain health insurance companies in California. Health insurance for companies and health insurance for small business tends to offer much broader health coverage than personal health insurance.
Or the doctor may only accept health insurance individual plans that are “grandfathered” in. Grandfathered plans are older plans that existed before the Affordable Healthcare Act plans and are not currently available on the California Health Exchange, but are still managed by health insurance companies in California.
You cannot enroll on a grandfathered health insurance plan. Anyone enrolling in health insurance in California must enroll in the metal tiered health insurance under Obama Care or Affordable Care Act coverage.
Provider Directories
The best way to determine if your doctor accepts Affordable Care health insurance is to check the provider directory. Most health insurance companies in California have a provider directory on their website. If you are thinking about enrolling in a health insurance California plan either on your own or with the help of a health insurance broker/agent because you need Obama Care help, it is important to find out if your doctor accepts the particular plan you are enrolling in.
The provider directory allows you or your medical insurance broker/agent to look for your doctor based on: name, area code, city, profession, etc. Most importantly it allows you or your agent to see what health insurance your doctor accepts!
Confused Yet?
If this all sounds confusing, that’s because it is. It is recommended that you seek out the help of one of the many health insurance agents in California to help you with this process; so that you don’t have to worry about the potential of going to your doctor with new health insurance through ObamaCare (ACA), from one of the health insurance companies in California that the doctor accepts, but a health insurance plan that the doctor doesn’t accept.
