When Is Open Enrollment For Health Insurance In California?

The open enrollment period for health insurance, for a 2017 effective date on your health insurance policy, is from November 1^st to January 31^st. January 31st is the final deadline for open enrollment for health insurance in California. You need to enroll in health insurance during this time if you are enrolling in individual health insurance in California whether on or off of the Covered CA exchange.

Health Insurance Enrollment Periods

The open enrollment dates, for a January 1^st effective date, are between November 1^st 2016 and December 15^th 2016. You’ll want your enrollment for health insurance to be completed by December 15^th  in order to get a January 1st 2017 effective date. 

The enrollment period for health insurance with a February 1st 2017 effective date is between December 16^th 2016 and January 31^st 2017. January 31^st 2016 is the health insurance enrollment deadline for Open Enrollment California 2017.

How To Get Health Insurance After Open Enrollment? 

If you try to register for California health insurance plans after the January 31^st 2017 health insurance enrollment deadline you will not be able to buy health insurance  whether it be Healthcare Exchange Covered CA insurance or private medical insurance. 

The only health insurance options you have after the health insurance open enrollment period is to submit proof of a health insurance qualifying event.  Qualifying events for health insurance are very strict. An example of a qualifying event to change health insurance coverage would be if you lost coverage on a group health insurance plan outside of the health insurance enrollment periods. 

Terminating your current health insurance individual plan in order to shop for more affordable health insurance in CA is not what is considered a qualifying event for health insurance and does not qualify you for health insurance after open enrollment.

Being Proactive During The Medical Insurance Open Enrollment Period

It is very important that you don’t wait until the last minute during the insurance open enrollment period because local agents and the health insurance companies in California will be extremely busy during this time. It is important to be proactive and set an enrollment appointment with a qualified agent early in the process in order to get your application sent off the the insurance carrier.
